Benoquin Cream is primarily used for depigmentation of the skin as a treatment for widespread vitiligo. Vitiligo is a skin condition where irregular patches of skin lose color and become whitened due to the destruction of melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells. Benoquin Cream lightens areas of skin that contain pigment to match the areas affected by vitiligo. This depigmentation is permanent and increases sensitivity to sunburn.
Benoquin Cream contains monobenzone (monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone), which induces free-radical formation in the skin, leading to the destruction of remaining melanocytes. It also inhibits the tyrosine enzyme involved in melanin production, gradually lightening normal skin to blend with vitiligo-affected areas.
Benoquin Cream's active ingredient is monobenzone, dissolved in a base comprising sodium lauryl sulfate, purified water, propylene glycol, cetyl alcohol, and white wax.
Benoquin Cream uses monobenzone to treat vitiligo, a condition where patches of skin lose pigment due to melanocyte destruction. By depigmenting the skin, it helps achieve uniformity in skin tone across affected and unaffected areas. This process is irreversible and heightens susceptibility to sunburn.
What are the side effects of Benoquin Cream?
Commonly reported side effects of Benoquin Cream include sensitivity to sunlight and UV rays, as well as mild skin irritation, itching, and redness at the application site.
When should Benoquin Cream not be used?
Avoid using Benoquin Cream if you are allergic to monobenzone or any of its ingredients, or if you seek reversible cosmetic skin lightening. It is also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How should Benoquin Cream be used?
Apply Benoquin Cream as a thin layer to normal skin areas you wish to lighten, gently rubbing it in while avoiding contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. Use 2-3 times daily for up to 4 months to achieve desired skin color uniformity. Once achieved, maintain the color by applying up to twice weekly.
How long should you use Benoquin Cream?
After achieving desired skin color, use Benoquin Cream up to twice weekly for maintenance. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it's almost time for the next dose—avoid doubling up.
How should Benoquin Cream be stored?
Store Benoquin Cream below 25°C in a cool, dry place to maintain its effectiveness.
